MATE Act Requirements

Reminder: 2023 is a license renewal year!

The DEA announced a new requirement for your DEA registration, as part of the Medication Access and Training Expansion (MATE) Act, now federal law. Effective June 27, 2023, eight (8) continuing education hours on treatment and management of patients with opioid or other substance use disorders will be required when renewing or initially applying for DEA registration.

If you will be renewing your DEA registration on or after June 27, 2023 (check your personal registration card when your renewal date is), you will need to have completed these eight continuing education hours.

Key Points

  • The 8 hours of training must be completed whether it is your initial registration or a renewal registration—beginning on or after June 27, 2023.

  • Training does not have to occur in one session. It can be cumulative across multiple sessions that equal eight hours of training.

  • In-person and virtual training is acceptable.

  • Previous education (up to 5 years) can be applied.
